Formerly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, India is a famous avifauna sanctuary that is home to thousands of birds particularly during the winter season.

The park is recognized as one of the world’s most important breeding and feeding grounds which hosts 366 bird species, 379 floral species, 50 species of fish, 13 species of snakes, 5 species of lizards, 7 amphibian species, 7 turtle species, and a variety of other invertebrates.

It stared life as a royal hunting reserve during the 1850s and was used as a game reserve for Maharajas and the British. In the 1938 shooting season it is reported that nearly 4,300 ducks were shot and killed by Lord Linlithgow, the then Governor-General of India, and his hunting party in a single day.

In 1982 Keoladio was declared a national park, after ornithologist and naturalist Salim Ali, known as the ‘birdman of India’, used his influence to gain the support of the government. In 1985 the park was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Many of the birds migrate from all over Asia in the winter months, from areas such as China, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Ducks, coots, geese and pelican sightings are common all over the park’s waters, while eagles, warblers, osprey, partridges and quails roam the land. Perhaps the most famous sighting is of the rare endangered Siberian crane.
