Leucistic Mandarin Duck

We get a lot of people contacting us about birds they've seen with white feathers or patches of discolouration and many people want to know how common albinism is in birds.

The answer is that true albinism is actually very rare in birds and most albino birds born in the wild will die soon after birth. The birds that you see with white feathers are really leucistic caused by a lack of melanin.
