Wetlands are important habitats for many species of birds and today is World Wetlands Day, which marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in 1971 in Ramsar, the Iranian city on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
Each year since 1997, government agencies and other organisations have taken advantage of the day to raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits and the Ramsar Convention.
