Conservationists are pressing for tougher laws to combat wildlife crime on Scottish grouse moors after a record number of poisoning cases against birds of prey such as golden eagles and red kites last year.

The RSPB Scotland said ministers should make grouse moor owners legally responsible for attacks on birds of prey on their estates because existing laws and voluntary codes had failed.

The conservation charity said the latest official figures showed there were 46 proven poisoning incidents targeting birds of prey last year – the highest total in two decades – and another seven cases where illegal poisons were found on shooting estates.

Puffins Tracked With Sat Nav
Thursday, 08 July 2010
Cutting edge technology is shedding light on the daily flight paths of puffins around the Farne Islands, off the Northumberland coast, and providing clues that could be vital to the seabirds’ survival.

Over the last year, scientists have used the technology to build up a picture of where the puffins are heading for when they take off from the islands each day. This shows that they are making a beeline for feeding ‘hotspots’ 20 miles out to sea.

Along with their established and protected breeding grounds on the islands, these hotspots may be important areas to conserve in order to ensure the puffin’s future survival.

World Cup Threat To Rare Vulture
Tuesday, 08 June 2010
One of Africa’s largest birds of prey is being taken to the edge of extinction by South African gamblers who believe that smoking its brains will give them supernatural powers to predict results in this month’s football World Cup.

Mark Anderson, of BirdLife South Africa, said he feared that belief in “muti” magic would accelerate the decline in rare Cape vultures. “Many vulture species across the world are in trouble. Our own species in southern Africa is declining sharply for a number of reasons, including reduced food availability, deliberate poisoning and electrocution from electricity pylons.

“The harvesting of the birds’ heads by followers of muti magic is an additional threat these birds can’t endure.”

A 10-year-old girl received minor cuts to her hand when an escaped bald eagle with a 6ft-wingspan landed on her. Sarah Arikan, who owns a hotel in Bristol, near Cribbs Causeway, said the eagle landed on her daughter India's wrist on Monday evening.

The bird was identified by a tag on its leg as belonging to a falconry centre about 50 miles (80km) away. It had been taking part in a display at Moreton-in-Marsh on Sunday and had failed to return. Chelsea Flower Show Designer Covers Garden Features To Help Birds
Monday, 24 May 2010
The creators of an entry entitled ‘Lights and Colours Of The Alps’, inspired by the mountains of northern Italy, hoped to use mirrors to "symbolise the high altitudes, intense sunlight and the reflective nature of the snow and ice".

Officials at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), which runs the show, say confused birds could fly into the reflective surfaces, risking fatal injury.

It means the Italian pair behind the unusual garden have been forced to paint over the tops of mirrors and drape safety nets across the garden, at a cost of £3,500, only days before show opens to visitors on Tuesday.
