Hampshire Spanish Sparrow Attracts Scores Of Twitchers
Thursday, 12 January 2012
In countries such as Spain, Turkey or North Africa it is quite a common sight.

However a Spanish sparrow, spotted in the coastal Hampshire village of Calshot, is one of only eight seen in the British Isles since records began.

Garry Bagnell was among some one hundred avid twitchers who came to Calshot on Wednesday to try and catch a glimpse of the bird.

'Brokeback Iceberg' Penguin Finds Female Mate
Tuesday, 13 December 2011
Toronto's zoo separated a pair of male penguins, Buddy and Pedro, last month to boost numbers of the endangered birds. The birds' unlikely affection for each other drew headlines around the world with cries of "Brokeback iceberg".

The Canadian zoo said on Monday that following the forced separation, one of the penguins, Buddy, had mated with a female. Pedro has yet to get lucky, but officials say it's not for a lack of trying.

The birds' separation was necessary because penguins are an endangered species and the two needed to mate with females, zoo officials said.

Freak Winter Hits Birdlife
Sunday, 11 December 2011
It has been a year of freakish weather – from a blisteringly cold winter, to a sizzling, early spring and cool summer, not to mention an unseasonably warm autumn.

Now, new data reveals the extraordinary "roller-coaster" effect this has had on Britain's bird populations, with numbers hitting record lows before recovering at equally unprecedented rates.

Freezing temperatures at the start of 2011 left many species down to their lowest numbers for more than 20 years, and for some their worst on record.

Halloween Bird Feeder
Wednesday, 26 October 2011
A carved pumpkin makes a great bird feeder. Either use an old pumpkin after Halloween is over or carve one especially for birds. A small to medium sized pumpkin is best and make sure you save the seeds.

Slice the pumpkin in half and carve out some jagged shapes on the edge to make perches. Fill the hollow with seeds, peanuts, suet, mealworms , raisins and chunks of pumpkin flesh.

A pumpkin feeder will not only help feed the birds during the cold weather but will make a colourful feature in your garden over Halloween.

The Big Year
Thursday, 13 October 2011
The Big Year opens in the USA today, a comedy film based on the book by Mark Obmascik, The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession.

The Big Year stars Owen Wilson, Steve Martin, Jack Black, Anjelica Huston and Rosamund Pike and is the story of a group of friends who are obsessed with birding and set out on their own big year, an informal competition to see as many bird species in one calendar year. Trappers Push Songbirds Close To Extinction
Wednesday, 21 September 2011
Linnets, which are high on the list of collectors’ “wanted” wild birds, are becoming increasingly scarce in their natural farmland habitats.

Because of its attractive song, the male linnet is valued as a cage bird. Goldfinches, redpolls and bullfinches, are also prized because of their striking plumage.

Experts fear that if the black market in songbirds continues to thrive it will help push some species – particularly those already battling against habitat loss – over the edge.

Penguins Use Smell To Find Family
Tuesday, 20 September 2011
The mystery of how penguins find their relatives in vast colonies may have been solved after scientists suggested they use their smell to locate their family.

Penguins could also use their sense of smell when searching for a mate to determine whether or not they are related to the bird in question, according to a new study.

The findings suggest birds may have a much better developed sense of smell than previously thought, and could help experts design programmes to preserve endangered species.

Bill Oddie Unhappy With BBC Treatment
Sunday, 18 September 2011
Like Victoria Wood and Alan Davies before him, Bill Oddie, the former Springwatch presenter, is upset by his treatment at the “impersonal” BBC.

“I’ve found the lack of communication disappointing,” he tells Mandrake. “I’ve got plenty of ideas and I’ve discussed one or two of them, but it’s not up to me. They could have called me and said: 'Let’s have a chat about things.’ ”

The naturalist, 70, who became famous as one of The Goodies, was replaced on Springwatch by Chris Packham, 50. “I don’t know if age plays a role, but I have begun to wonder,” he says of his prospects at the BBC.

Boom Time For Britain's Loudest Bird
Thursday, 01 September 2011
Britain's loudest bird, the bittern, has enjoyed its best year on record in England, conservationists have said.

The RSPB and Natural England said the number of breeding males topped 100 for the first time since it returned to the UK in 1911 after becoming extinct here.

The distinctive "booming" call of the male helped researchers track the normally elusive wetland species.
