Some say it sounds like a Sonic Youth album. Others have likened the guitar noise to a rock concert soundcheck. But this particular band is made up of 40 zebra finches jamming on electric guitars and cymbals at the Barbican, in London.
The walk-through orchestra-come-aviary by French artist Celeste Boursier-Mougenot is the latest installation in The Curve, the centre's visual art space. Boursier-Mougenot, who trained as a theatre composer, has placed plugged-in Gibson Les Paul guitars as perches, and upturned cymbals as bird feeders.
As the flock of finches fly around and land on the instruments, wipe their beaks, or use twigs to pluck at the strings, they create a unique and changing soundscape. Curator Lydia Yee said it was a auditory and visual experience for the visitor.

Wetlands are important habitats for many species of birds and today is World Wetlands Day, which marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in 1971 in Ramsar, the Iranian city on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
Each year since 1997, government agencies and other organisations have taken advantage of the day to raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits and the Ramsar Convention.

Rare Bird Rediscovered In Afghanistan |
|
Wednesday, 27 January 2010 |
One of the world's rarest species of bird which was feared extinct has been rediscovered in the most unlikely of places – war torn Afghanistan.
Despite the fighting and chaos going on around it, the large billed reed warbler has been spotted in the north east part of the country. The bird is so rare it had only been spotted on three occasions in more than 150 years before the latest sightings in Afghanistan. Scientists have now pin pointed its habitat and armed with this knowledge hope to be able to protect the bird.

The Big Garden Birdwatch 2010 |
|
Tuesday, 26 January 2010 |
This weekend, the RSPB holds its biggest event of the year encouraging people to count the birds in their garden.
Around half a million people are expected to take part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch making it a really high profile event. And, with the recent cold snap, the public and media’s interest in garden birds has been heightened even more.
To tie in with the event, the RSPB is offering new adult members a choice of free gift that includes the popular RSPB classic apex nest box worth £11.99 if they join by 31 March. Or, you can still choose the RSPB Handbook of British Birds or bird feeder with seed – all perfect gifts to help people enjoy the birds in their garden.

The RSPB has made a plea to stop the slaughter of European seabirds. Seabirds are among our most visible and iconic indicators of ocean health in an increasingly pressured world. In Europe, seabirds such as shearwaters fascinate and inspire us by effortlessly gliding across the wave-tops.
However, their future is uncertain as long-line fishing hooks and nets capture thousands of birds every year, causing a slow and painful death. For the individual fishing vessel, this may seem a minor inconvenience but to the Balearic shearwater, a species that faces extinction within a human generation, it is another nail in its coffin.

From 14th December until 5th January tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas will take part in the annual Christmas Bird Count run by the Audubon Society.
